Air Traffic Control

Every single part of this country has governed, controlled, and regulated air travel thanks to the Air Traffic Controllers. Air Traffic Control (ATC) is comprised of many parts, two of which are the Air Traffic Control System Command Center (ATCSCC) and Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC) (Freudenrich, 2021). ATC is a complex group of individuals, equipment, and technology that ensure the safety of flight.

There is so much that goes on behind the scenes that we don’t get to see, and it is quite remarkable what it all entails. The ATCSCC primarily overviews all air traffic. It is essentially the motherboard of all ATC. It was an agency implemented in 1970 to improve the already existing National Airspace Station (Secondary Navigation, ATCSCC, 2021). There are over 21 divided zones in the United States, and those zones are divided into even smaller areas, giving us Air Traffic Control in each region/zone. The ATCSCC oversees all these zones, and will step in to resolve issues, such as traffic overloads, weather, and other discrepancies. Each of the 21 zones have their own Air Route Traffic Control Center.

Their duties consist of issuing route assignment, assigning designated altitudes, and providing current whether information (Home, ARTCC, n.d.). The ARTCC communicates with all air traffic via Instrument Flight Rules (IFR), Ultra High Frequency (UHF), and Very High Frequency (VHF). The controllers in each ARTCC will pass off an aircraft flying out of its respective zone into the new zone, ensuring communication will be able to be established with the aircraft and the gaining ARTCC.

Whenever we think of “Air Traffic Control”, we tend to just think of the towers at the airport that monitor nearby operations. However, it is a larger, wide-scaled operation that involves many more groups such as the Air Route Traffic Control Center and the Air Traffic Control System Command Center that make aviation safer.
